The Challenge
Designing a user-friendly booking process for Adventure with Volvo, a fictional car rental company. The process needed to cover key steps such as searching for a location, selecting a date and time, choosing a car, adding an extra driver, viewing pricing, selecting extras, and reviewing the summary.

Goals
My goal was to understand user challenges and pain points in the booking process and apply the UX design process to address them. I aimed to design and build a clickable prototype for user testing, along with a detailed set of annotations for the software development team.

Research & Insights
During the early research phase, I conducted interviews and a remote survey to understand how people experience the car rental process. I found clear frustration with repetitive form-filling, lack of transparency, and unclear costs — especially around extras and return options.
User research revealed three key things:
- People hate friction — especially long forms, waiting, and not finding what they expect
- They want trust — secure login and payment, clear pricing, and flexible logistics
- They prefer options early — so they don’t have to backtrack in the process
These insights helped define the booking flow before I began sketching.
Design Highlights
- Instant search suggestions after typing three letters
- Progress bar to guide users through the booking flow
- BankID login for auto-verifying driver's licenses
- Flexible payment: now or later (for a small fee)
- Filters & add-ons for the car nerds who care about trunk size and drivetrain
- Mobile key: it’s 2025, we don’t need physical keys
- UI with humor: playful microcopy and easter eggs (like a “dead end” message when no cars are found)

Bonus Concept
Not part of the original brief, but I had an idea. User can share their trip on social media using the #AdventuresWithVolvo, building a sense of community and generating user-driven marketing. Even promote “rent before you buy” concept, especially since a 30-minute dealership drive isn't always enough to make a decision.
Volvo could follow up rentals with:
- Emails about the car they drove
- Weekend test drive promotions
- Seasonal travel campaigns
It’s a simple UGC concept with branding potential. And it makes car rentals feel a little more like adventures.
Outcomes
This was a conceptual project, but feedback from testers and peers confirmed:
- The booking flow was intuitive and logical
- Flexible payment options, like Vipps or MobilePay, were appreciated
- BankID and mobile key access were seen as trustworthy, secure and modern

Reflections
If I had more time, I’d:
- Test earlier and more frequently, make it even easier
- Refine accessibility features, make less steps in the booking progress
- Explore in-app support and onboarding flows
- Work more on the bonus concept, I think It’s a great idea!
